A collection of hilarious and compelling insights and anecdotes, diary entries, poems, ‘true’ facts and cartoons on travel from Karl Pilkington, unlikely star of the Ricky Gervais Show , the world’s most successful podcast – now in kindle format. This is the travel book for people who don’t particularly like travelling, it’s Karl Pilkington, star of The Ricky Gervais Podcast Show , with a suitcase, occasionally with his passport, more often with a bemused suspicion of anything vaguely exotic, and an observant eye for the disappointments, tedium, general weirdness and absurdities of being a tourist abroad and at home.

From staring at Mount Vesuvius in case it erupts and the horrors of a Lanzarote nudist beach to the curiosities to be seen in the world’s weirdest museum. Told with his inimitable deadpan humour, Pilkington’s stories are interspersed with fond reflections on life back in England, from Salford joy riders to what his girlfriend’s mum and dad have for dinner on a Thursday it’s chops and veg.

He both baffles and enlightens with his take on topics as diverse as population control, the rights of monkeys and how long you can stay alive with your head chopped off.

Xfm Sets Launch Date For South Wales Station

Xfm launched on 1st September , the day after Princess Diana’s death, which led to a low key launch, which didn’t help ratings, however the independent era of the station helped launched the careers of Ricky Gervais who was the Head of Speech and his assistant Stephen Merchant who went on to write The Office and Extras for BBC Two. Capital Radio Group acquired the station less than a year later. They attempted to introduce an AOR format similar to Virgin Radio which Capital also tried to acquire later ; this was met by resistance from Xfm’s small but loyal audience; and the station’s original alternative format was mainly restored with a mainstream skew targeting twenty something men.

On 7th September , it was announced that Xfm would close on Sunday 13th September and relaunch as a national digital station ‘Radio X’ which would feature mainstream presenters such as Chris Moyles, Vernon Kay, Ricky Wilson and Johnny Vaughan and more of a male focus than before. Radio X launched on Monday 21st September at 6. Unlike Xfm, Radio X breakfast and drive have a heavy amount of speech content.

Radio X is a British National commercial radio station focused on alternative music , primarily indie rock , and owned by Global. The station became full-time on 1 September During the following year the station played a range of music from its studios in 97 Charlotte Street. On 23 August of that year, Xfm was closed down for four days, during which a test tape featuring mainstream soft-rock acts was looped.

The station subsequently relaunched with a more mainstream format, and a new advert featuring a cartoon radio saying “Don’t be afraid! Listeners also lodged objections with the Radio Authority , which found XFM to be acting in a manner contrary to its licence requirements, and a degree of alternative output was eventually restored, particularly through night-time playlists and specialist shows.

Following the take-over by Capital, the station dropped its wide-ranging music policy, which was replaced by a format based on USA college stations. The first audience figures after this change showed a sharp decline. The DJs were no longer able to select some of their own tracks, and specialist shows were dropped. The station soon became more male-orientated and featured football coverage and “laddish” output. Together with talent such as Zane Lowe and Christian O’Connell , this yielded growing listening figures.
